Those who know me well know that I have a close relative who was a very successful college basketball coach. Before I met him I would have viewed advice from a sports figure about how to manage a business as the stuff of pop culture personality. But to my surprise I've learned more from him than any of my entrepreneurial mentors about what it means to be a leader, to live for the enablement of those you work with, and to build a vision big enough it will outlast you. So, with that, I'd like to pass along some sage words for any entrepreneur, from another amazing basketball coach, John Wooden. If I were to sum it up in my own, far less elegant way, it would be:
If you are focused on the competition, you will never be great, just better than the next guy.
